Installed News::NewsRC.pm on Asterix today - am using this module in the NNTP.pl script to keep track of posts that have already been read from the subscribed newsgroups. Also required an install of the supporting Set::InsSpan module. All tests for both NewsRC and IntSpan were OK.

Installed libnet-1.1 on Asterix today - this is a bundle (NET:: prefix) which includes modules for FTP, SMTP, POP3 and NNTP support.  I need the NNTP support to run the usenet monitor script which was running previously on dean.its.waikato. All test were OK. LDAP.pm and DNS.pm were allready present in the NET folder but no others, so nothing was replaced.

MetaData and Search Engines - is discussed in a thread on the CMS-List today where there's talk about meta-data use in CMS's as well as general accesss and use by external search-engines. (One poster claims most crawlers are now ignoring meta-data). This is gonna be a good thread though as it looks like its expanding into taxonomy generation, pros and cons of Dublin Core, in-house serch tools etc.

Lucene Search Engine - is a sub project of the Apache Jakarta project, its an indexer written in Java and looks promising. It doesnt currently have a crawler built into it but one of the project plans is to add one so we should revisit this when we review search-engine requirements. (the documentation specifically mentions HtDig as their reference tool)
