Web Hosts, Producers and Consumers are a mixed bunch across campus and outside amongst external client entities. Thought I'd knock up a quick visio diagram we can use as a memory-jog when planning or reviewing architecture for web applications.

New Analog Snap-Shot report on Search Activity (link)

New Analog Snap-Shot reports on Search Activity are now running against the main daily-rotated Apache log on Obelix. This will show all keyword and search-phrase activity from midnight to the time at which the report runs. Is currently cron'd under DEANS account and runs at 1pm. Check out todays reports for QuickSearch and HTSearch. May be useful to judge impact of any marketing or PR activity.

Securing Win2k Web Hosting Server is the topic of an excellent thread on ISP-Webhosting this week where folks give their opinion and tips for securing IIS on Win2K, as well as loads of the to-be-expected advocacy - Windows vx Linux comments. Well worth a read.

Microsoft's Content Management Server (link)

Microsoft's Content Management Server - is discussed in a thread this week on the CMS list. One postee concludes in his review of MS CMS - "If you've got a simple, page oriented brochureware site that you want to have various non-technical people in your organisation manage, then this could well be a product worth considering.  If your solution is short-term (1-2 years) and you can afford to have a dead-duck after that time and re-spend again, then MS-CMS is probably a viable proposition".

Not overly encouraging,  but as he points out, this is the 1st release of Content Management Server from MS (though was in its 4th edition when they bought it off EnCompass-Labs last year)

RealNames Going Under, Keywords And All (link)

RealNames Going Under - one of the firms that pioneered the keyword approach to Internet addressing, will go out of business Monday. Triggering the shutdown was a decision by Microsoft Corp., which allows keywords to resolve in IE, not to renew its exclusive contract with RealNames
