Global Warming : From Inside the Globe - The National Post reports that a team of American and Canadian researchers has found evidence of real global warming: "the temperature of the Earth's crust is increasing at a remarkable rate". A reader of the SlashDot post responds .. "Dr. Beltrami and his colleagues from the University of Michigan found that more than half of the land's heat gain over the past 500 years came during the 20th century, and 30% since 1950."

SashXB scripting language source-code was released by IBM this week according to a Wired article yesterday which provoked a hesitant Slashdot response. "SashXB is an open source application environment that exposes native functionality to JavaScript" ... but ... "SashXB weblications can currently run in a simple window, in a Glade-designed UI, in a GNOME panel, or even in a console-based scripting environment" according to the official IBM site.

Requirements for a Web Ontology Language was published by the W3C last month as a working draft. The document "specifies usage scenarios, goals and requirements for a web ontology language" and an area of specific interest to us is the application of this to building web-portals but also covers use with other items like corporate website management, multimedia collections and use by intelligent agents. Will also be a useful read when talk about meta-data requirements.

Perl-XML FAQ - Excellent guide to the various parsers and Perl XML modules available and how to apply them. Also introduces endcodings, validation and common problems. This is the 1st draft and will move eventually but is a great guide as it is.

W3C Launches Mailing List Search Services: W3C is pleased to announce W3C Mailing List Search Services. Olivier Thereaux of the W3C Systems Team developed the services based on Namazu, a full text search engine.

XML Entity Encoding problems continue in the template extraction script. Michel Rodriguez (http://www.xmltwig.com) posted a useful wee script on the ASPN perl-xml list on Thursday which takes an inline XML stream and sets up a custom handler for character data which prints the Ascii and character values for each character found. Have dropped a copy to /team/tech/perl/inlineXML.pl
