Kon-Tiki explorer Thor Heyerdahl dies (link)
Kon-Tiki explorer Thor Heyerdahl dies - the Norwegian explorer, who crossed the Pacific on a balsa raft and the Atlantic in a reed vessel, died yesterday of cancer. I read his book Kon Tiki as a teen-ager and loved it at the time. A mix of science and adventure. He had a number of interesting theories (none of which were broadly accepted in academic cirlces) about migration of pacific peoples, and beleived that a race of people travelled from the americas on the Humbolt current to make their way to Easter Island, and onward to the Chathams off the coast of New Zealand which is what fascinated me at the time. He suggested that these people may have preceeded the Moriori on the Chathams, and amongst the evidence he quoted was that the Kumara (sweet potatoe) is of American origin (I hate the taste of Kumara which is why this sticks in my mind) He once grumbled..."Many scientists have always viewed me like a daredevil who's gone over Niagara Falls in a barrel" 4:46:26 PM |
