Straight Up Cobbers (link)
I received an email from the thin man today linking to a story about a legal proposal in the works in the Australian state of Victoria. There are plans to set aside a 4ha site near Darlington to cater for burial of about 1 per cent of deaths in Melbourne, representing up to 400 bodies a year. Doesn't sound too wacko yet does it?. It gets worse. What's especially horrid about the proposal is that all the bodies to be buried there will be laid to rest vertically and dropped into post-holes big enough to hold 16 bodies, as a kind of space saving move. To make matters worse there will be no grave-stones and bodies will be wrapped in a bio-degradable bags so that the cemetary can be returned to pasture land after the place fills up. For Christs sake!!. Australia is basically a continent sized waste-land, surely they could establish a decent cemetery out in the scrub somewhere. I responded to Pete expressing my disgust, to which he replied rather crassly...
