Linking, Thinking on AIDS Day  (link)
World AIDS day

It was world AIDS day on the Sunday and there's an article at Wired that talks about all the commentary on various personal websites that pops up during these events. As usual, I'm a little late for this one (I swear I'll be late for my own funeral, even it it kills me).

There was a big campaign on last week to encourage folks to write about how AIDS has impacted on their lives and to link to other sites discussion the topic. Although I'm a few days late, the topic is a fascinating one.

According to the latest UN report things are only getting worse, especially in Asia and Africa, two places I've been to and been able to witness the public efforts underway to raise local awareness of the risk.

In 1994 I talked to a doctor from Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) once who was totally demoralised over his time spent combatting AIDS in Africa and the general failure of these education programs to make any impact.

He painted a very gloomy picture of the future, saying many Africans saw the disease as just-another-thing that might kill you, and said it was almost impossible to encourage condom use in a culture where such things are definately alien. Fortunately, it looks like things may be on the improve slighlty amongst the teenage population in Uganda according to WHO.

I've Got the Shits

well I should say I had the shits. Apparently there's some sort of virus going around at the moment that gives you a good case of the runs for a few days. My girlfriend had the thing over the weekend and I felt a little unstable at the Golf tournament on Monday (in fact I had a great big smelly yellow crap in the toilet at Lochiel, sorry to the cleaners)

Did the honourable thing and took the day off yesterday following a nite of getting up every hour or so to give the porcelen a good workout. To test things out I had a big chinese meal for lunch today (chinese style that is, not stir-fried chinese people). So far so good, still wearing the same pair of undies. :-)

Hi-tech workplace no better than factories (link)

Scott Adams (of Dilbert fame) has plenty more ammunition if you believe whats written in this article on the BBC website...

Staff in technology jobs work in the white collar equivalent of a 19th century factory. suffering from isolation, job insecurity and long hours, research has found.
