I'm Off Bambi-Killing (link)
I'm Off Bambi-Killing- at least that what's one of my workmates called it when I them I was going deer-stalking tommorow for four days. To be honest I've never actually shot a deer, although I didn't tell them that of course :-) Although my father and brother and plenty of other extended family members are well keen on bambi-killing, I've always prefered the more sedate life-taking hobby of fishing, trout-fishing to be specific. Fortunately deer and trout are often found in more or less the same places in bush areas of New Zealand like the Urewera's where we're heading which means the whole family can enjoy bloodsport together. This time I thought I'd try my hand at bringing home the bacon, well the venison anyway. We'll be flying into the Urewera forest by helicopter form Murupara near Rotorua. The flights about 15min or so, and hopefully we wont be shot out of the sky by local maori as was threatened late last year. First reaction from loads of folks is "how can you shoot something as cute as a deer" but they clearly dont realist that these critters are a menace, but as the Forest and Bird society say " Deer are eating the heart out of New Zealand's native forests." 5:51:57 PM |
