Whales Get Sonic Reprieve (link)
Whales Get Sonic Reprieve - You could say I have some 'green-tendencies' but although I wouldnt exactly call myself a whale-hugger you'd have to say that the following is good news for our underwater cousins.. "A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Navy from using a high-frequency sonar system to detect enemy submarines, due to fears of its effect on whales and other sea mammals." - source Turns out that the US Navy is developing a sonar 'system' which can generate underwater signals of over 200 decibels. In technical terms this is what you might call ... "a fucking loud sound". Apparently in March of 2000 a similar sonar was used by the US navy in the bahamas that killed 8 whales which were found beached nearby with internal hemorrhaging around their brains and ear bones, injuries consistent with exposure to loud noise. MMMMmmmm..... Sushi anyone ? 4:57:26 PM |
