Human DNA sequencing complete (link)
There's crap-loads on the idiot-box and in the papers about hot-topics like the SARS virus, Iraq and possible action aganst Syria etc, and these stories will go on to dominate the headlines over coming weeks, but the biggest news with probably the smallest fanfare was without a doubt the announcement from the scientific community about the completion of the mapping of the human genome. "After three billion years of evolution ... we have before us the instructions set that carries each of us from a one-celled egg through adulthood to the grave," said Dr Robert Waterston of the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium Science doesn't often make the headlines unless there's some angle that broadcasters think consumers might pick up on, so don't be suprised if there's not a single mention of the genome project in tommorows news. 9:28:13 PM |

Thai Road Toll 359 in 3 days (link) Believe it or not 23,000 people have been injured and 359 have died during the first three days of the five-day 'water festival' underway in Thailand. At least half of those incidents involved alchohol consumed during celebrations marking this annual festival. Jeeze, thats about the same number of deaths we have in a whole year here in NZ. Maybe they should rename it 'mekong whiskey festival' instead. 9:25:28 PM |
