Petrol-Head Heaven in Hamilton
Dreams came true for petrol-heads around the entire Waikato region last week when our mighty mayor Redman secured his position in council for the next few dozen terms when he announced he had secured the Autralian V8-Supercars event for the city from 2008 onwards. This was after Absolutely-Idiotic-Wellington and Horses-Arse-Auckland failed to reach local consensus for hosting the NZ leg of future series.
The rest of the country's media appear to be in a state of denial coz there hasn't been a lot of coverage about Hamilton's moment of potential glory. Even the Shell-Helix sponsored motor-sport show on Sunday only gave it a few fleeting seconds of mention. It seems everyone is assuming its never gonna materialise.
It'd be interesting to see some stats but I'm picking that Hamilton has a generous V8-per-capita ratio compared to other more "cosmopoliton" centres and that fact is likely to help lubricate the position of any local opposition to the event. Plus the thing is to be hosted in the Frankton suburb which would have to be the highest density of paint-shop, wheels-and-mags outlets, car-sales yards and mechanic outfits of anywhere in the country.
Now that the dust is beginning to settle on the news, is anyone interested in investing in a new bar on commerce street? :-)
