Subject: Ducati's 600SS's any good...?

Hi,
I made a post here about a month ago about deciding between a ZX6R, GSXR600
and a CBR600.
Most of the replys said something like, "they are all good, test ride them
all."
cool. but now i am getting close to buying one (almost got 10 grand saved
up) I have been seeing a lot of Ducati 600SS's around for under $10,000.
They are about '95 usually with 10-20,000 k's on the clock. Problem is, I
have never really considered one before because i thought they would all be
too expensive, so i dont know anything about them.

Has anyone got any suggestions about these bikes? Ducati do have a good
name, and in terms of style.... well, dont think much compares to that name
in terms of recognizability. Not that is all I am in for.

Especially like to hear from any 600SS owners about maintenance costs, parts
availability, any problems that tend to occur in this model etc...

Thanks in advance for any replys.

Luke
(still deciding.....

Reply From: RussellM (RMurchie@au.infogrames.com) Date: 2000/04/13 I have a Monster 600 (same engine) and a GSXR600, so I can give you a fair comparison on performance, the GSXR stomps all over the Ducati, really the Ducati 600 is fairly underpowered (but is a fairly fun bike to ride) and a bit buzzy, but having said that, I don't like my GSXR very much (Its a good bike, just a bit boring, as are all 4cyl bikes, just a personal thing), but my monster (on the odd occaision it runs.. many many mechanical problems to start with, but all sorted now... I hope..) is more fun to ride around town. -- RussellM
Reply From: Zebee Johnstone (zebee@zip.com.au) Date: 2000/04/13 Compared to these, a 600SS is "underpowered". maybe a bit more midrange and possibly more "useability" but on the whole if you are after horsepower, look elsewhere. Servicing costs on 2 valves aren't that great but you do need to find a place that can do a decent job. iinet is WA isn't it? Check Andy Mac at Eurocycle in Vic Park, he knows what he's doing when it comes to Dukes. he can give you an idea of servicing costs too. So much depends on your expectations. I far prefer the feel of twins, the grunt, the vibes. Other prefer the top end and scream of 4s. Oh, and sit on one. The ergonomics of the red bikes are far more mainstream than the old bevels, but even then.... Zebee
Reply From: Adam Harrison (adamhZEROSPAM@thehub.com.au) Date: 2000/04/13 Yes they are a llittle underpowered, but they handle sooo sweetly. My mate has one and they are a hoot to ride. You can jump straight on it and wring it's neck - it's so easy to ride. If they had another 10hp you could easily embarrass much bigger bikes in the tight stuff. I think it would easier to resell a 750 or 900 model though. Adam
Reply From: Richard Fay (fayr@ozemail.com.au) Date: 2000/04/13 Trouble with that logic is that ANY new 600 handles sweetly yet have 40-50 hp more.
Reply From: Adam Harrison (adamhZEROSPAM@thehub.com.au) Date: 2000/04/13 Trouble with that is that logic doesn't have much to do with it :) Some people find the 600s a little boring and love twins. I dunno...buy what you like to ride, who cares what other people think. Luckily I've got a few different bikes in the garage so I'm happy. Adam
Reply From: Rott (nobrottundies@hotmail.com) Date: 2000/04/13 I rode one about 3 months ago up the old road. It handled very well, but it was severely underpowered. Probably didnt help that I jumped off my zx9r straight onto that thing. On the road, the power shortage is very noticeable. You can wring its neck driving out of corners without worrying about it letting go. I had no problems whatsoever keeping up with a fast rider on the 600, even when I was running it in! Rott
Reply From: Marc Englaro (marce@ozemail.NOSPAM.com.au) Date: 2000/04/13 I was talking to a guy at Scott Walker about the ~95 600/750/900SS. He was saying they are all essentially the same bike, just with different motors. If this is the case, how does a 600ss compare against the 900ss. Is the motor noticibly heavier ? Does the frame not deal with the extra weight ? Marc VT250 Spada actively evaluating 600/750/900ss'es
Reply From: Zebee Johnstone (zebee@zip.com.au) Date: 2000/04/13 Other way round - the frame etc is pretty much designed for the bigger motor. Won't be heaps heavier, the main difference is in the barrels and a bit in crank and such. ON the whole, the bikes *are* similar in size and weight, but different in horses and how they feel as they get said hrses to the road.
