I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for my fellows, whatever I can. And any man who is not a communist at the age of twenty is a fool. And yet any man who is still a communist at the age of thirty is an even bigger fool -- George Bernard Shaw
Many folks are firmly attached to a single political philosphy. Things are black and white to them and they can't understand why their system can't work for everyone, but in reality one system doesn't neccessarily work for all for any length of time.
The distinction between idealogies and postions of political parties seems to blur day by day and it's more difficult than ever to be able to say with conviction where ones political allegances lie. This may explain the political indifference and complacency that seems to exist in NZ.
According to the online Political Compass survey which is a questionaire who's results are used to place you on a split axis graph with left/right bias on one axis and libertarian/authoritarian on the other, I'm pretty firmly located on the left, and slightly on the libertarian. Basically in the same quadrant as Ghandi, the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandella. Could be worse I guess :-)
I filled out a similar but much shorter Questionaire at the Advocates for Self Government site which assessed me similarly, as a Leftie/Liberal. Now that eveyone seems to agree that I'm a Leftie I thought I'd lightly the political landscape of today to see I think they're right:
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed; those who are cold and are not clothed -- President Dwight D.Eisenhower, April 16, 1953
