Many moons ago I worked in sys-admin like roles in Microsoft houses where open-source was literally non-existant. We used proprietary desktop and server OS's, Databases, Programming languages, Mail servers, TCP/IP drivers you name it. I started using Perl from the command line to handle batch functions, then found I could use regular expressions from Perl in ASP web pages where VBScript wasnt cutting it. All of a sudden the open-source floodgates opened...
