Aaron started racing in motocross, but was sidelined by knee injury. He turned pro in 1991 and took his first AMA National points in the 1993 season. Had a race win in 1994 at Loudon in the Supertwins final and had his first AMA superbike race in 1995.

In 1996 he raced for Yoshimura Suzuki, had his first Superbike win (Sears Point) and won the overall 750 Supersport title in his first year as a factory rider. In 1997 and 1998 he finished consistantly for Suzuki with numerous AMA Supersport and Superbike wins and placings, ending up 5th overall both years in the Superbike championship.

Yates had a single season racing for Team Muzzy Kawsaki in 1999 in the AMASuperbikes, he had a number of 4th placings but no podiums. During the season he had Doug Chandler as teammate who won 3 races during the season. This was to be the last year Muzzy would be running the official factory supported ZX7Rs.

As well as riding a ZX7R he was also entered in the 600cc AMA Supersport series taking a win at Pikes Peak, and three other podium finishes finishing 5th overall in a season dominated by Nicky and Tommy Hayden.

Switched to Suzuki in 2000 and had his best Superbike season with a 3rd overall after 5 podium finishes. Got himself into trouble early this year (2004)in the Superbike race in Daytona when he assaulted a privateer rider after the two collided near the start of the race.
